App Portfolio Valuation
The app is the visible face of a system — ValuFai values the system
A mobile app is rarely an isolated asset. It is usually the visible face of a larger system: a website, an API, a backend, a database, a domain, and often a team. ValuFai values that system as a portfolio, because the app’s value depends on the rest of it.
What counts as an app asset
- Mobile apps across app stores.
- Web apps and internal applications.
- SaaS services and recurring-revenue products.
- App-store listings and the brand equity attached to them.
- APIs, backends, and the data they serve.
- The domain(s) the app operates under.
Revenue and engagement
App value is driven heavily by the shape of revenue and usage: recurring or subscription revenue versus one-off purchases; active users and their trend; retention; and churn. Recurring revenue that persists without the founder’s daily involvement is worth materially more than one-off revenue that depends on constant promotion.
Platform dependence
An app that depends on an app store’s search, a payment processor’s policies, or an advertising platform’s rules carries that dependence as risk. Platform dependence is measured and reflected in the range. It is neither ignored nor treated as automatically fatal — it is evidence.
Code ownership and backend dependencies
Who owns the code, the accounts, the servers, and the data? If the codebase is undocumented, the accounts are in a founder’s personal name, or the backend depends on services only one person can operate, the value a buyer can rationally pay falls. Ownership and transferability are explicit inputs.
The combined system
One portfolio can contain an app, a website, an API, a backend, a domain, and a team. Each has a standalone resale estimate, but the combined economic system can be worth more — or less — than the sum of those estimates:
- The app and website can share a user base and cross-sell to it.
- The API and backend can serve several customer-facing products at once.
- The domain can protect the brand and capture category traffic.
- The team can operate the whole system more cheaply than any buyer could reassemble it.
The combined value is not a mechanical sum of resale prices. It is the value of one functioning commercial system, adjusted for the dependencies and concentrations inside it.
Operating capability
An app portfolio is often worth more with its team than without it. ValuFai values operating capability separately — replacement cost, time to rebuild, retention arrangements, and key-person concentration — and reports it apart from asset value so nothing is double-counted.
Transfer requirements
App-store accounts, developer accounts, and data usually must be transferred with the business. Whether those transfers are documented and clean, or complicated and undocumented, changes how a buyer prices the risk. Transfer requirements are surfaced explicitly.
Results are indicative, low/base/high ranges driven by evidence — not a guarantee of any sale price.
